Venepuncture – Learning Objectives

As part of this venepuncture course, students will develop the following competencies:

 

  1. Professional Standards – Understand and articulate key professional considerations including competence, the importance of valid informed consent, comprehensive patient assessment, and adherence to infection control protocols.

  2. Anatomical Knowledge – Demonstrate the ability to identify the veins in the forearm that are suitable for venepuncture and understand the anatomical characteristics that make certain veins more appropriate.

  3. Site Selection – Explain the variables to consider when selecting a vein for venepuncture, such as vein accessibility, patient comfort, and potential complications.

  4. Risk Awareness – Recognize and outline possible contraindications and risks associated with performing venepuncture, and know how to minimize them.

  5. Equipment Proficiency – Be able to identify, assemble, and correctly use all necessary equipment for safely performing venepuncture.

  6. Patient-Centered Safety – Describe the steps to ensure safety and effectively address patient needs before, during, and after venepuncture, including ensuring comfort, reducing anxiety, and preventing adverse events.

  7. Documentation Practices – Understand how to document the procedure accurately and comprehensively, in line with professional standards and organizational guidelines.

 

Infection Prevention and Control – Learning Objectives

This course will provide students with the knowledge and skills required to uphold the highest standards of infection prevention and control in all healthcare environments.

By the end of the session, students will:

  • Appreciate the critical importance of infection prevention and control in safeguarding patients, colleagues, and themselves across all healthcare settings.

  • Understand the concept of the chain of infection and recognise their role in breaking that chain to prevent the spread of disease.

  • Be familiar with the range of equipment used in healthcare to support infection prevention and control, and understand how and when to use it.

  • Know how to dress appropriately for both clinical practice and university skills sessions, maintaining professional and hygienic standards.

  • Practise and perform the correct handwashing technique to ensure effective infection control.

  • Identify when personal protective equipment (PPE) is required and demonstrate how to don and doff it safely.

  • Recognise the importance of correct waste management, including the safe disposal of clinical waste.

  • Understand the appropriate steps to take in the event of a sharps injury or an eye splash, ensuring prompt and safe management.

 

Students will need to complete the venepuncture study guide prior to undertaking supervised practice and competency assessment(s)
