KEC was established in 2019 by Kingston GP Chambers (KGPC) in order to meet the need for undergraduate student placements in primary care settings. We have partnered with local universities including; Kingston University,  Roehampton University, St George’s Medical School, St Mary’s Twickenham University, Imperial Medical School and University College London, and further afield, Southampton University, in order to support the training of nursing, pharmacist, paramedic, physician associate, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and medical students.

Incorporated into our teaching approach are our inter-professional learning sessions which allow students the opportunity to work and learn together, benefitting from viewing patient care from the perspective of peers with alternative approaches and skills. This is an innovative approach which has gained significant interest from other teaching bodies and is currently the subject of a research project funded by HEE.

KEC runs a dedicated training facility in New Malden, where we provide GP consultation appointments, observed by students, for any patient registered with a Kingston GP practice.

It is possible for students who attend on placement to receive further training upon qualifying and work within one of the 20 GP practices overseen by Kingston GP Chambers. One of our previous nursing students has commented:

"My journey from student nurse with a placement at Kingston Education Centre to starting a new role within practice nursing has been a great experience. I have received full support from the local federation of Kingston GP chambers paying my wage whilst undertaking the General Practice Nursing course. This amazing opportunity has helped me accomplish the career I have always dreamed of. The support I have received has helped my development and I am now a skilled, confident and effective practice nurse"
